Bread for Life, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides hands-on training, instruction by industry professionals, and community support for men and women with the will to improve their lives and the desire to begin successful careers in the hospitality industry. The industry involves a wide range of career opportunities and potential employers.
Who does Bread for Life serve? for Life serves men and women who have the will to improve their lives. Perhaps poor choices or difficult circumstances have left them underemployed, unemployed, or seemingly unemployable. The support students receive in the Bread for Life program allows them to make a fresh start in the work world as they take their training and classroom experience and embark on a career path in the hospitality industry.
What is the training and how long does it last?
The 12-week program is a composite of hands-on learning in our training kitchen where students are taught to bake bread rolls and practical classroom instruction by local industry partners. Upon graduation from the program, students are ready to enter a career path in the hospitality industry. Some BFL graduates choose to pursue further education and training such as the Athens Technical College hotel, restaurant and tourism or culinary programs if qualified.
When do sessions begin? Applications are now being accepted.
Where is the training held? Classroom instruction and hands-on training take place in our teaching kitchen located at 3761 Mars Hill Rd. in Watkinsville from Monday through Friday, 11:00 - 5:00 p.m. Transportation is provided, leaving from the Classic Center at 10:40 a.m. and returning by 5:30 p.m. Students also tour properties engaged in the hospitality industry.
How are students selected? Applicants must submit an application and a signed behavioral contract. If selected, the prospective student must pass a drug test (paid for by Bread For Life) and provide a recent background check from the Clarke County Sheriff's Department in Athens. Students who have been convicted of a crime involving violence against a victim will not be allowed into the program.
